An extra bonus today: my unbelievably insightful and witty commentary on some of the most vulnerable teams on the bubble. (BubbleGrid primer here)

  • Rhode Island - Even with wins over St. Joseph's and St. Louis, Rhode Island may have to appeal to a higher power to dance in March. St. Joe's (#184) and St. Louis (#83) don't have the RPI cachet to boost the Rams' stock much. Even with a semifinal loss to RPI #14 Temple, they still could be jumped if a team below them (Dayton, for example) gets a bigger win. A win over Temple might not get them in for sure, but could keep them from being jumped.
  • San Diego State - Same situation as Rhode Island; without a semi-final win over RPI #7 New Mexico, they're playing with fire.
  • Memphis and UAB - A Memphis-UAB semi-final would keep one of the two alive. Even losing in the final (best case to #42 UTEP) might not be enough, depending on to whom and by how much.
  • Washington and Arizona State See Memphis/UAB. The ASU-Washington semi would essentially be, as Jerry Palm says, a play-out game; winning it guarantees nothing.
  • Georgia Tech - A loss to UNC could be the nail in the coffin, both for the Jackets' NCAA hopes and for Paul Hewitt's tenure in Atlanta.
  • Florida - Their first two potential SEC tournament wins (#137 Auburn and #68 MSU) might not be enough to guarantee a berth. Even beating Vandy in the semis might not be enough.
  • Mississippi - On the other hand, an Ole Miss win over Tennessee in the SEC quarters would be big, and an additional win over Kentucky in the semis might be enough.
  • Bye, UConn. Thanks for playing. Or perhaps not playing today.
